THE SCOTTISH SUN 🔵 Uefa could tell Rangers they must play all home Euro group games at Hampden

RANGERS face a race against time to have Ibrox ready for Euro group action – or UEFA could tell them to play all their ‘home’ games at Hampden.

Gers are on the verge of agreeing a deal that will see them kick off the new season at the national stadium after delays to work on the Copland Road Stand at Ibrox.

It’s certain they will play their Champions League third round qualifier at Hampden – plus at least two domestic games.

They would also play a Champions League or Europa League play-off game at the home of Scottish football before the end of next month.

Gers are aiming to return to Ibrox by the start of September – but any further delays at Ibrox could force an extension.

And that could cause potential issues for their Euro group campaign as UEFA rules state ALL four home matches must be played at the same ground.

Matchday One in the new-look Champions League groups starts on September 17, with the Europa League groups starting eight days later.

UEFA’s Article 25, which refers to stadium announcements, would allow Gers to have play-offs at a different ground from group games.

But it states all group games must be played at the same stadium, unless UEFA bosses grant them special dispensation to switch during the group phase.

That means if they had to play even one group game at Hampden, they’d need the approval of European football’s governing body to finish the group campaign back at Ibrox.

Rule 25.07 states: “The stadium announced at the beginning of the competition is considered as the home stadium of the respective club.

“It may be the ground of the home club or another ground in the same or another city within the territory of its association. All stadiums are subject to the approval of the UEFA administration.”

Rule 25.08 adds: “As of the league phase, a club must in principle play all its matches in the competition at one and the same stadium.

“Additionally, any change of stadium between the play-offs and the league phase must be agreed in advance with UEFA.”

Gers are being forced to start the season away from Ibrox after work on the Copland Road Stand was held up by a shipping delay.

Their first game at their temporary home will be a either the Champions League third round qualifier on August 6/7 or the meeting with Motherwell on August 10.
