TALKSPORT 🔵 Marc Cucurella wanted to join another Premier League team before Chelsea transfer
Marc Cucurella could have joined a Premier League rival before his move to Chelsea.
The Spanish defender signed a six-year contract with the Blues back in August 2022.
His arrival came after a deal worth over £60million was agreed with Brighton by the club.
Cucurella has since gone on to make 132 appearances for Chelsea, scoring eight goals and adding 11 assists from left-back.
He has also lifted both the Conference League and Club World Cup under Enzo Maresca this year.
However, the 27-year-old has revealed he could have been wearing a different shade of blue altogether.
Manchester City prior to sealing his switch to Stamford Bridge.
Pep Guardiola had even asked his compatriot to join the club, only for City to fail to reach an agreement with Brighton.
Recalling their transfer interest, Cucurella told Informe: « Man City wanted me before I joined Chelsea.
« They were on fire, one of the best teams in the world. I wanted to go.
Premier League title earlier in 2022 when Cucurella left the Seagulls.
Guardiola’s side had also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League and would go on to win the treble the following season.
However, they were unable to add the Barcelona academy graduate to their squad.
Instead, Guardiola bolstered his defence with the signings of Manuel Akanji and Sergio Gomez during the 2022 summer transfer window.
Akanji often deputised at left-back as City regularly lined up with a back four consisting solely of central defenders.
As for Gomez, he arrived from Anderlecht to provide cover both on the left side of defence and further forward.
Although Cucurella missed out on the treble having seen his move to City break down, he has found success with club and country since.
Alongside his trophies with Chelsea this season, he won the Euros with Spain last summer.
Since his debut aged 22 in 2021, Cucurella has one goal in 22 caps for La Roja.
