RANGERS REVIEW 🔵 Why Rangers hierarchy ‘should be praised’ for Russell Martin debacle

The Ibrox club made their worst start to a league season in 47 years under the stewardship of Martin, who was appointed as head coach in the summer.

While the people at the top of the club were criticised for acquiring the services of Martin and sporting director Thelwell, Halliday, who spent five years on the books at Rangers, also thinks they warrant plaudits for how they brought an end to their respective tenures.

Indeed, Martin was sacked after just seven league games, with Thelwell shown the door not long after.

« I think admitting your mistakes shows a strength, » he said live on BBC Sportsound. « I think you can criticise the appointment of Russell Martin and Kevin Thelwell, but acting as swiftly as they did, and recognising their errors, and maybe changing their mould ever so slightly, I think should be praised.

« Three months ago, Rangers had their worst-ever start to a league season since 1978. We’re now talking in January, as, ‘Are they favourites for the title?’ It’s nuts.

« I think that’s down to not only Danny Rohl, but probably mismanagement on Celtic’s terms as well.

« It’s been an incredible job that Danny Rohl’s been on, but I still maintain that I do feel like they have to have a really good January transfer window to take it over the line. »
