GOODISON NEWS 🔵 ‘Ridiculous’ – Paul Merson baffled live on air at what Everton fans have said about David Moyes return

Paul Merson believes David Moyes knowing Everton “inside out” is a “ridiculous” notion after returning for the first time in 12 years.

The Toffees announced the Scot’s appointment on Saturday 11 January, having parted ways with Sean Dyche just hours before their FA Cup clash against Peterborough United on Thursday (9 January).

While Graham Potter was also a contender to take over at Goodison Park [The Times], Moyes very quickly became the preferred choice for The Friedkin Group and was quickly appointed on Merseyside.

Speaking live via Sky Sports News [11 January, 12:08pm], Merson said: “I’ve got mixed reviews about him coming back. You don’t go back. People are saying it’s good because he knows the club inside out. He left 11 years ago! It’s ridiculous.

“They’re similar managers [Moyes and Dyche], wanting to keep it tight and playing with what they’ve got. Managers sometimes come into a job, with players out of the team because they fell out with the manager.

“Moyes hasn’t got that at Everton. This is the team so I don’t get it. I like David Moyes, but just remember, it was 11 years ago.”

Moyes’ Premier League experience will be the main reason for being brought back to Goodison Park, not just because of his 11 years spent at the club between 2002 and 2013.

Since leaving Liverpool, the Scot has gone on to coach Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland before finding his feet at the London Stadium, even winning silverware for the Hammers.

Of course, TFG will not be targeting European football or domestic finals already, given the troubles that the Toffees are currently in, but it will certainly be a long-term ambition.

It remains to be seen if Moyes can lead this current squad to that kind of success, but with him being tied down to a two-and-a-half-year contract, he is being given the opportunity to prove himself.

For now, the immediate task is to lead the Blues away from the Premier League relegation zone, with just one point separating from the dropzone after 19 matches.
