Everton players were immediately uplifted after being told that Sean Dyche was sacked, according to Dominic King.
Writing in the print edition of the Daily Mail (11 January, pg 107) King shared that Kevin Thelwell told the squad that Dyche was given his marching orders at the Titanic Hotel.
The journalist described the reaction of the squad, who were preparing for the 2-0 win against Peterborough hours later under Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman.
David Moyes has since been confirmed as the new manager and will take charge against Aston Villa this Wednesday (15 January).
King said: “Kevin Thelwell, the director of football, went to the Titanic Hotel, where the squad were preparing for Peterborough, to break the news that Dyche had gone and Baines and Coleman would take charge of the game.
MORE TOFFEES STORIES
“It is understood that there was a noticeable uplift in the atmosphere. It would be wrong to say there were celebrations but, certainly, not many – if any – were going to shed tears. This behaviour has been seen many times before and it is something about which Moyes will be fully aware.”
Everton players react to Sean Dyche sack
It would not be surprising to see the team now come out of their shells, given the reaction to Dyche leaving Goodison Park.
Aston Villa overcame West Ham United in their FA Cup third-round tie on Friday (10 January), but have been inconsistent in recent weeks and the reinvigorated Toffees may fancy their chances in the Premier League.

Moyes is in it for the long haul – he was against the idea of signing a short-term contract just to steady the ship and move on – and the Everton squad know they have a blank canvas from which to make their mark in the team.
With the usual rotation having taken place against the League One Peterborough side on Thursday, fringe players who have seldom featured this season will have high hopes of catching the eye of Moyes.
The Toffees currently sit 16th in the Premier League table, a single point above the drop zone, albeit having played a game fewer than their survival rivals due to the postponed Merseyside derby back in December.
It is time to turn things around now.
