GOODISON NEWS 🔵 Everton: Premier League ‘disaster’ on the cards

Former Premier League defender Nigel Winterburn has opened up about FFP and the issue it could cause Everton in the near future.

Earlier this season The Toffees were deducted Premier League points due to breaching Financial Fair Play as well as profit and sustainability rules.

Despite having two points returned via an appeal, Sean Dyche’s side is left in limbo as they wait for a potential second punishment. The last day of the season may not mark the end of the problems.

Ex-Arsenal defender, Winterburn believes that the potential of this issue arising wouldn’t be a good look for the Premier League.

As quoted by Liverpool World, he said: “My gut feeling is that the system is not quite right. They need to evaluate it and assess the rules. There are so many confusing instances to look at this season.

“I just hope we don’t end up playing the last game still unsure about who is relegated and who’s not. For the Premier League, that would be an absolute disaster.”

With Nottingham Forest also suffering a points deduction this season, there is potential for additional punishment.

If Everton can get around further adversity then the summer transfer window could see them let go of various stars. This wasn’t something Winterburn agreed with, however.

He continued on to say: “I was listening to an ex-chairman the other day. He mentioned that sometimes the only way to keep in line with the rules of Financial Fair Play is to sell the players that you’ve brought through your academy because that is where the most value is.

“To have to sell those players to meet the rules and regulations doesn’t sit well with me or the supporters.”

Could Everton sell Jarad Branthwaite this summer?

The emergence of Jarrad Branthwaite has been one of the shining lights for Everton this season. Since signing from Carlisle United he has made his way through the academy set-up.

The Englishman spent the last two seasons on loan at Blackburn Rovers and PSV before becoming a regular at Goodison. This season he has racked up 27 appearances, featuring in all but three games in the Premier League [FotMob].

Everton

Transfermarkt values him at £30m but given that he is 21-years old and has good Premier League experience, he could be sold for more.

This could go some way to help ease some financial concerns that The Toffees have, not helped by the new stadium build.

It would certainly be a sadness for Everton fans to see a talent like Branthwaite leave so early into his career for the club. If it is necessary to avoid further points deductions, it might be on the cards this summer.

In other Everton news, former goalkeeper Neville Southall has hit out at the club’s board of directors as the Toffees wait to find out the punishment for further financial breaches.
