GOODISON NEWS 🔵 ‘All-round future’ – Paul Merson names who Everton should have appointed instead of David Moyes

Paul Merson believes Lee Carsley should have been contacted before appointing David Moyes as the new Everton manager.

The England Under-21s coach was one of the names linked with a move to Goodison Park as pressure continued to grow on Sean Dyche, apparently wanting to hold talks with The Friedkin Group [TEAMtalk].

Instead, TFG chose the more experienced figure of former West Ham United boss Moyes, who returns to the Blues after 11 years away from Goodison Park.

Speaking via Sky Sports News [11 January, 12:08pm], Merson said: “If he wanted it… I’m looking at the all-round future, not just the next three or four months.

“I would have gone and seen about Lee Carsley, to see if he was prepared to come and manage Everton.”

Lee Carsley to Everton a preferred choice?

Moyes’ return to Merseyside has been greeted with a rather mixed reaction, but it remains to be seen how supporters would react if Carsley had been chosen instead.

While the 50-year-old was briefly brought in to manage the England national team, it was a very short spell in charge before returning to the Under-21s set-up, much to his delight.

Carsley clearly loves what he does for the young Lions, creating a pathway for future players to break into the senior side, and that might not be as possible if he had moved to the Premier League.

The Toffees are just one point above the Premier League relegation zone, having struggled for wins and goals under Dyche, and now is certainly not a time to experiment with youngsters at Finch Farm.

Undoubtedly, the Merseyside club have a plethora of young talents at the manager’s disposal, but it would be a huge risk to bring someone in who puts so much trust in young stars.

Moyes’ only target this season will be to help the Toffees avoid relegation. With the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure struggling, the youngsters’ fearlessness might be a positive.

In other Everton news, Graeme Souness lashed out at the Toffees squad after what they did to Sean Dyche.
