DAILY RECORD 🔵 Callum Wilson decision puts Celtic on transfer red alert as West Ham United make double call

The striker is poised to call it quits after just six months with the Hammers and another player is on his way out as well

West Ham striker Callum Wilson is reportedly set to cancel his contract at the London Stadium within days amid Celtic’s burning desire to land a new centre forward.

The 33-year-old only joined the Hammers on a free transfer from Newcastle United last summer and has scored four goals in 17 matches in all competitions for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. However, Wilson – who has netted twice in nine senior caps for England – is now poised to call it quits at the London Stadium as he searches for regular first team football.

The Daily Mail report that the forward is expected to come to a mutual agreement with his club in the next 10 days that will see the remaining six months of his contract ripped up. They also add that West Ham will listen to offers for fellow England international James Ward-Prowse.

It comes after Parkhead legend Sutton called on the Hoops to address their well-documented problems at the top end of the pitch by making a move for the experienced Wilson. Writing in his Record Sport column on Saturday, he said: « I would rather they pushed the boat out for Callum Wilson.

« I know he’s had his injury issues and it might be an expensive move – but they need to gamble right now. The rewards outweigh the outlay. The next couple of weeks is where the title will be won and lost. Hearts are in pole position and they have already strengthened their squad.

« They are putting Celtic to shame with their scouting and recruitment. We have to see if their new arrivals are any good but at last they are being proactive, looking at what they need and doing the business. »

Wilson has banged in 90 goals in England’s top flight during his time with Bournemouth, Newcastle and West Ham. The frontman has also been linked with Sevilla in La Liga and Championship side Coventry. However, Sky Blues boss Frank Lampard insists he is not looking to add to his attacking options this month. He said: « No, I’m very happy.

« When you think what Brandon (Thomas-Asante) has given us with his versatility, I’ve talked about what Romain (Esse) can bring us, and when I talk about our front boys, with Ellis (Simms) and Haji (Wright), I’ve got huge trust in those players. Huge trust!

« And I understand it, I sometimes hear people go, ‘we need this, we need that,’ but I think we’ve got players at the top of the team. This team, I don’t know the numbers, but they broke 50 goals in about 20-odd games in the first half of the season.

« Some of the goals were shared around the team, but our strikers, without Haji Wright in that first period of games, we wouldn’t have been top of the table. We were scoring, scoring, scoring.

« Brandon Thomas-Asante was top scorer in the league before he came out injured. Ellis Simms has been on runs of scoring goals, and I’m very, very happy with the boys at the top of the pitch. »
