Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has given a hint over whether Trent Alexander-Arnold will stay at the club beyond this season.
Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool future remains shrouded in uncertainty, with the star into the final six months of his contract amid strong interest from Real Madrid.
The defender received much criticism for his performance in Liverpool’s draw with Manchester United last weekend, with there being some suggestions that he was distracted by the transfer speculation surrounding him.
FA Cup.
Alexander-Arnold found the net with a superb strike and gave a very good account of himself.
Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk also see their current Liverpool contracts expire at the end of the season.
Fowler expressed his belief that while Salah and Van Dijk are likely to remain at Liverpool, the same may not apply to Alexander-Arnold, who could be seeking a fresh challenge at Real Madrid.
Speaking on ITV prior to the game Fowler said: ‘From a club point of view, to let the likes of these three players go down to the last six months, they’re the questions that people probably want to ask.
‘What will happen will happen. My own personal point of view and it’s certainly not inside information, I just think two of them will stay one of them will go and it’s up to the people at home to come to their own conclusions on that.’
When pressed further on who he thinks will leave, Fowler stated that Alexander-Arnold could depart.
He said: ‘I think it’s fairly obvious, I think obviously Mo will stay and I think Virgil will stay.
‘I love Trent as a player, I think he’s probably one of the best in the world at what he does and of course I’d love him to stay but we’ll see.’
After the game Fowler said: ‘He’s won everything, he wants to maybe try something else. I want him to remain a Liverpool player. He’s a world class player. Who knows what will happen.’
Alexander-Arnold has spent his entire career so far at Liverpool, making 335 appearances for the club.
He has won an array of trophies – the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
The opportunity of new challenge at Real Madrid could well be hugely appealing to Alexander-Arnold.
Regardless of whether he departs in the summer, Alexander-Arnold could win further silverware with Liverpool this season.
Arne Slot’s side are top of the Premier League and the Champions League league phase table, while they are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup. Liverpool are trailing 1-0 against Tottenham following the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
